Cherryvale Elementary School Overview

Cherryvale Elementary School, established in 1967, is located approximately 9 miles northwest of Sumter, South Carolina, directly across from Shaw Air Force Base and U.S. Army Central. Sumter, the county seat of Sumter County, lies 45 miles east of Columbia, the state capital. The city’s major industries include manufacturing, military, and healthcare. Notable landmarks include Swan Lake Iris Gardens—the only public park in the U.S. featuring all eight known species of swans—and Shaw AFB, home to the 9th Air Force and the 20th Fighter Wing.

Academic Focus and Instructional Strategies

Cherryvale Elementary is a Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) school committed to improving student achievement in English Language Arts and mathematics. The school integrates research-based instructional practices and student-centered strategies, with a focus on increasing student engagement through Kagan cooperative learning structures.

Faculty and staff provide structured, reflective, and engaging learning experiences within a safe and supportive environment. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, meet behavioral expectations, and strive for personal growth and academic excellence.

Student Support and Enrichment

To support academic success, Cherryvale employs two reading interventionists, one math interventionist, and a reading coach. Teachers participate in ongoing professional development focused on building literacy-rich classrooms, providing hands-on science experiences, incorporating math manipulatives, and offering targeted individual and small-group instruction.

School Culture and Student Development

Character education and leadership development are essential parts of Cherryvale’s mission. The school emphasizes strong partnerships among students, families, staff, and the broader community. Staff members are dedicated professionals who foster responsibility, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

The curriculum includes core subjects—English, math, science, and social studies—alongside physical education and enrichment programs. Additional services include counseling, academic tutorials, and co-curricular activities designed to support student growth and ensure a successful transition to middle school. These efforts align with the goals of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
