Cherryvale Elementary School is a Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) school that focuses on raising student achievement in ELA and math. This initiative enhances teacher instructional practices and student-based strategies that are being incorporated into the curriculum. Additionally, Cherryvale is focusing on increasing the level of student engagement by implementing Kagan instructional strategy protocols into all classrooms. Faculty and staff provide daily opportunities for students to participate in well prepared instructional activities and to reflect upon personal choices made throughout the day. Within a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment, students focus on creating their best work, achieving personal satisfaction for their accomplishments, and maintaining behavioral expectations. To support students, the faculty and staff teach character education lessons and encourage students to surpass their academic and social expectations.
Cherryvale Elementary School is also an Arts in Basic Curriculum School. The school was designated as an ABC school by the South Carolina Arts Commission. This grant-funded initiative will allow teachers and students to explore the fine arts while still learning the skills being taught in the core curriculum. Increasing student achievement requires the support of two reading interventionists, one math interventionist, and a reading coach to support teachers and students. Teachers and staff use professional development training sessions to create high progress literacy classrooms, to develop hands-on science experiences, to provide individual and small group learning opportunities, and to incorporate manipulatives in mathematics classrooms. Thus, maintaining partnerships among administrators, teachers, parents, students, and community members assist the school with developing students who become leaders. Achieving academic excellence helps students meet the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
